Ukraine will step up drone attacks on Russian soil, a senior official has said. Listen to a special episode of the Daily podcast on what Grant Shapps's appointment as defence secretary means for Ukraine while you scroll.

The father of a British volunteer killed fighting in Ukraine has told Sky News he"paid the ultimate price for defending people he'd never met".His father, Paul Newey, said his son was"the light of all our lives, he was the whole family’s baby boy with the cheeky character to match".

"When Daniel decided to go to Ukraine to help the war effort Samuel decided to follow by being a medic which he did with great bravery, helping anyone he could," he added. "One of the most selfless acts a human can do. Fighting in a foreign country, for people he had never met, without question and never faltering." Others include Simon Lingard from Lancashire, and former British soldier Jordan Gatley. As we told you earlier, today is the first day of a new school year for children in Ukraine.

Drones have become a huge part of the war, with both Ukraine and Russia using them as cheap, easily adaptable weapons. Major naval drills about to start in the Baltic Sea will focus on repelling a Russian attack for the first time, Germany's navy chief has said. The US navy will send the Mesa Verde - a ship of more than 200m in length - into the drills, Mr Kaack said.Vladimir Putin is due to hold a meeting with XI Jinping. The two countries have developed closer ties since the war in Ukraine started - much to the alarm of the West. "He calls me his friend, and I am happy to call him my friend, because he is a person who does a lot for the development of Russian-Chinese relations.

"Because this is the stage of the war… when hostilities are gradually being transferred to the territory of the Russian Federation," he added. Under President Putin's direct patronage, Russia built the Kerch Road/Rail Bridge - at 12 miles long the longest road bridge in Europe - to link the Russian mainland with Crimea.Ukraine was not consulted about the construction and did not provide permission for the bridge to be built.

To protect the bridge Russia has resorted to a number of passive measures, which have included truck-mounted smoke generators, radar decoys mounted on boats, and active air defence systems.
