Ukraine conducted a major drone attack on Moscow, hitting an oil refinery and disrupting flights, as its leaders secured new support commitments from the US and France during the G7 summit.
Ukraine executed one of its most extensive drone operations since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion over four years ago, striking a key Moscow oil refinery for the second time in a week and causing disruptions to commercial air traffic at Moscow's airports.
Russian officials reported the overnight incident, with the Defense Ministry asserting that its air defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed 555 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions. Notably, nearly 200 of these unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down while allegedly approaching the Russian capital. The Moscow Oil Refinery, located on the city's southeastern outskirts, was directly hit by several drones, as confirmed by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
Visual evidence from the scene showed plumes of black smoke rising from the facility, impacting nearby areas including a shopping mall. This daring long-range strike occurred just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a significant coordination call with U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, a discussion he suggested could lead to substantial shifts in support. Zelensky's remarks followed the G7 summit in France, where he secured renewed commitments from world leaders.
French President Macron, speaking alongside Trump at the Palace of Versailles, emphasized the G7's reunified stance on Ukraine, declaring their intent to continue advancing assistance to bolster Ukraine's defensive and counteroffensive capabilities. The timing of the attack is particularly notable, coinciding with Russian President Vladimir Putin's hosting of leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Kazan, a meeting focused on expanding strategic partnerships with member states including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, East Timor, and Vietnam.
