Kyiv defence minister suggests Kremlin is amassing 500,000 troops to launch an offensive possibly as soon as 24 February - but military analysts say this would be 'too gimmicky' - even for Russia
William Alberque, director of strategy, technology and arms control at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, agreed that it was unlikely that Russia was quietly mobilising 500,000 troops considering the logistics and sheer replacement costs.
But he did agree to some extent with Mr Reznikov’s theory that Russia was planning an anniversary attack, saying it was possible that Moscow “will hit either earlier or later to retain the element of surprise”. He added: “Indeed, the fact that Ukraine has publicised this may have complicated the Russian calculation. On Thursday, Russia marked 80 years since the Soviet victory in Stalingrad – now Volgograd – with a massive parade complete with planes, tanks and armoured vehicles.
Vladimir Putin lays flowers at the memorial of Marshal of the Soviet Union Vasily Chuikov to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in Stalingrad “Unfortunately we see that the ideology of Nazism in its modern form and manifestation again directly threatens the security of our country,” Mr Putin claimed.
