A local resident runs past the damaged houses in Bakhmut, the site of heavy battles with Russian troops in the Donetsk region, Ukraine, Sunday, Apr. 9, 2023. Russia’s Defense Ministry said 106 Russian soldiers were released from Ukrainian custody as part of an agreement with Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War alleged that almost half of the 80 men and 20 women soldiers who returned home “have serious injuries, illnesses or have been tortured.” It presented no evidence for its claims. The freed Russians were being flown on military transport planes to Moscow for medical treatment and rehabilitation, the Defense Ministry said.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s presidential office said at least six civilians were wounded in the latest Russian shelling.
