Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have likely largely withdrawn in"good order" in line with existing plans. Since the outset of the conflict, Russia has demanded that Ukraine hand both Luhansk and Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine, to pro-Moscow separatists. "And there are no more forces that can be brought in from Russia. They paid a big price for Severdonetsk and Lysychansk."

Speaking in his nightly video address, Mr Zelenskyy said: "There have been no significant changes on the battlefield in the past 24 hours. Russian troops are ratcheting up their efforts to secure full control of the entire Donbas area in eastern Ukraine - and from what we witnessed, there's very little which is going to stop them right now, writes Sky's special correspondent Alex Crawford.

The areas have been fiercely contested for the past eight years and President Putin launched his 'special military operation' in February after unilaterally declaring Donetsk and Luhansk 'independent'.
