Kremlin claims 2,000 Ukrainian troops are encircled in Donbas
"Unfortunately, as of today, the entire Hirske district is occupied," Hirske's municipal head Oleksiy Babchenko said in a television broadcast.11:44:34Russian troops in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia were left wounded after a goat set off a boobytrap of grenades they had planted. Millions of tonnes of grain lie idle in Ukrainian ports amid a blockade by Russian warships in the Black Sea.
In the first weeks of the occupation there were regular civilian protests in the region, which were put down. Last week, EU member Lithuania banned the transit of steel and other metals to neighbouring Kaliningrad across its territory from Russia after EU sanctions against Moscow came into effect. Following a botched attempt to capture Ukraine's capital Kyiv in the early stages of the invasion, Russian forces have shifted focus to the Donbas region, where the Ukrainian forces have fought Moscow-backed separatists since 2014.
Mr Lavrov also said he agreed with recent comments made by Russian President Vladimir Putin who called the collective West an"empire of lies". A translation of an article by the Kommersant news outlet, which is owned by Putin ally Alisher Usmanov, says:"History - the requirements for the subject results of mastering the basic course of history should reflect... an understanding of the causes and consequences of the collapse of the USSR, the revival of the Russian Federation as a world power, the reunification of Crimea with Russia, a special military operation in Ukraine.
