Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday that he is open to talks with Putin in Israel, but only if there is a cease-fire in place.
Russian troops are pressing their offensive across Ukraine, pounding populated areas with artillery and airstrikes. The bombardment has intensified as units fan out to prepare for an assault on Kyiv, a major political and strategic prize for Russian President Vladimir Putin but one that ground troops would pay dearly to take.
According to Zelenskyy, 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the Russian invasion began. The U.N. human rights office said at least 579 civilians have been killed, including 42 children, but they believe the actual number of casualties is much higher.
