About 700,000 children have been brought into Russian territory from war zones in Ukraine, a Russian lawmaker said late Sunday. The U.S. and Ukraine have previously said that many children have been forcibly deported from their homes during the conflict.

Ukrainian forces are facing “complicated and fierce” fighting on the eastern front lines but are making progress in the south and near the embattled city of Bakhmut, Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said Sunday.“In recent years, 700,000 children, fleeing the bombing and shelling from the conflict areas in Ukraine, have found refuge with us,”
