BREAKING: The Russian Defence Ministry is claiming that 600 Ukrainian troops have been killed in a Kremlin strike. It says the strike was revenge for a deadly Ukrainian strike on Makiivka on New Year's Eve, which Ukrainian forces say killed 400 Russians

Live reporting by Michael Drummond. Updates from Alex Rossi in KyivRussia says its latest strike is in retaliation for a Ukrainian attack on 31 December that killed 400 Kremlin troops by some estimates.Footage posted online appeared to show a building purported to be a vocational college in the mining town of Makiivka reduced to a field of smouldering rubble.

Posting on Telegram, the department said:"Over the past 24 hours, Russian reconnaissance assets uncovered and reliably confirmed through several independent channels the temporary deployment of AFU personnel in the town of Kramatorsk. Sweden and Finland intend to join the alliance but approval of all members is needed - and Turkey has raised objections about Sweden.

Heightened military cooperation between the two allies comes amid speculation in Ukraine and the West that Moscow may use Belarus as a launching pad for a new attack on Ukraine from the north. Russian commanders are"highly likely pre-occupied with the potential for major Ukrainian offensive action" in one of two sectors, according to UK intelligence.
