The breach near Verbove in the Zaporizhzhia region was a modest but important gain for Kyiv as it fights a grueling counteroffensive.
DNIPRO, Ukraine — Ukrainian forces and their armored vehicles punched through Russia’s main defensive line on the war’s southern front and are operating on the other side, a local commander said Saturday, in a modest but crucial gain for Kyiv as it seeks a major breakthrough in its grueling counteroffensive.
The commander said that Ukrainian infantry passed the final line “two to three weeks ago,” but the vehicles have only recently been able to move through. He said that “the front line has also moved further back behind the dragon’s teeth,” but this has taken place “more slowly.” Since launching their counteroffensive in June, Ukrainian forces have made only incremental progress against Russia’s well-fortified defenses, which include areas saturated with tank and antipersonnel mines between three and 10 miles deep.
