Lasers and supercomputers will be used to test the United Kingdom's planned A21 next-generation nuclear warheads, the MoD explains.
The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense has just announced its intention to test its next-generation nuclear warhead without actually detonating it.
The new warhead, the A21 “Astraea,” will replace the existing British-made warheads on the nation’s stockpile of Trident-II submarine-launched missiles. The MoD has also explained that the UK’s current stockpile of nuclear warheads will be maintained until Astraea is officially available. Work on Astraea is underway as part of a multi-billion-pound effort to modernize the British nuclear enterprise.is scarce, and its expected output is unknown. However, the MoD has disclosed that the Astraeas will be integrated into Mk 7 re-entry vehicles.
