The law finally passed parliament after weeks of delay, and Rishi Sunak hopes the move will lift his waning popularity before the national elections.

| British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promised on Monday to start sending asylum seekers to Rwanda within 10 to 12 weeks as the upper house of parliament finally passed the required legislation, delayed for weeks by attempts to alter the plan.

“No ifs, no buts. These flights are going to Rwanda,” Mr Sunak told a news conference earlier on Monday. “This is novel,” he said of the policy. “It is innovative, but it will be a game changer.” Some Labour and unaffiliated peers wanted the legislation to include safeguards for Afghans who previously helped British troops and to establish a committee to monitor asylum seekers’ safety in Rwanda. But eventually, the Lords let the legislation pass its final parliamentary step without formal changes.

He had previously said he hoped the policy would be operational by the northern spring, without giving a precise date.
