This research addresses the stability and longevity of perovskite cells, focusing on the critical lead-tin cells used in advanced designs.

To enhance the performance of lead-tin perovskite cells, the team investigated the role of the hole transport layer, a crucial component in solar cell function.Researchers at the University of Surrey’s Advanced Technology Institute have achieved a significant milestone in solar energy technology, developing lead-tin perovskite solar cells with a power conversion efficiency of over 23%.

Professor Ravi Silva, Director of the Advanced Technology Institute at the University of Surrey, said, “This research brings us closer to panels that not only generate more power over their lifetime but are also longer lasting. Greater efficiency and fewer replacements mean more green energy with less waste.” While silicon-based solar panels dominate rooftops today, perovskite solar technology has emerged as a game-changing alternative.

“The understanding we have developed from this work has allowed us to identify a strategy that improves the efficiency and extends the operational lifetime of these devices when exposed to ambient conditions,” said Hashini Perera, Ph.D. student and lead author of the study. This approach not only prevented these reactions but also increased the efficiency and lifespan of the cells, making them more viable for commercial use.
