Foreign Office sources toldthat senior embassy officials have also been interviewed in recent weeks over the leak, which is said to have included direct quotes from U.K. Cabinet ministers about the war in Iran.has been unable to independently verify Roscoe's alleged involvement and has contacted the U.K. Foreign Office for comment via email. No reason was given for his departure or its abrupt nature. It has not been confirmed whether he was sacked or left voluntarily.
Roscoe had been considered a leading contender for the permanent post, which was ultimately awarded to another diplomat, Sir Christian Turner. Mandelson's firing, which took place days before the first state visit to the U.K. of President Donald Trump's second term, meant Roscoe took over as ambassador to the U.S. in September 2025.
Mandelson lost his job over his links to Epstein, with whom he maintained a friendship even after Epstein was convicted of soliciting prostitution from a minor in 2008. A British government inquiry into his appointment is currently underway. He had been deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Washington since July 2022. Between September 2025 and February 2026, he served as chargé d’affaires to the United States.
Prior to his posting in Washington, he was the U.K. ambassador to the United Nations General Assembly from 2019. Before that, between 2016 and 2019, he served as director of communications at the Cabinet Office and later at the Department for Exiting the European Union. Roscoe also previously worked as communications secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth II from 2013 to 2016.
Earlier in his career, he was chief press officer for former British Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown from 2006 to 2009.
