The proposal, prepared by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, aims to tackle illegal crossings and strengthen safe and legal routes for genuine refugees. however, Labour MPs have opposed the reforms, stating they are unfair and too demanding for those seeking to settle in the UK. The reforms would make it more difficult for foreign nationals with histories of crime or those rejected for asylum to stall their removal with appeals to human rights law.
Additionally, the proposal would double the length of time required for individuals to attain indefinite leave to remain, from five years to 10 years. This change would apply retroactively, forcing those on the cusp of qualifying to wait an additional five years. Burnham has expressed his agreement with the 'broad thrust' of the plan but has stated that the goverment needs to 'get the balance right.
' The shadow home secretary for Britain's Conservative Party, Chris Philp, has characterized the immigration reform slate as the first political trial of Burnham and his goverment. philp believes that if the government tables the proposals unamended, the Conservative Party would support them. Yet, he as well predicts that Burnham may capitulate to opposition from Labour MPs and dilute the plans, allowing migraNts to gain permanent residency after just five years, along with benefits withheld for several years after.
