Michael Gove has admitted the government ‘must go further and faster’ to increase the ability to carry outSpeaking at a Downing Street press briefing, he said a constraint was the availability of chemical agents required to develop the tests, but said the government was working with companies worldwide to access the materials needed for widespread testing.

Boris Johnson has faced criticism over the UK’s testing policy, with figures from Public Health England showing the government is yet to meet its 10,000 a day target. It aims to increase this to 25,000 a day by mid-April – which is still far short of the 70,000 a day that Germany, which has one of the lowest death rates in Europe, is managing.

Anthony Costello, professor of global health and sustainable development at University College London , criticised current efforts to increase testing and said doing it en-masse is the key to lifting sanctions on people’s lives.
