The UK should “reassess its defence presence” in Scotland in light of new threats – including from Russia – in the most northerly part of the globe, a committee of MPs has said ChrisGreenNews reports
, climate change is reshaping the Arctic by opening new trade routes and economic activity in the area is on the rise, it said, with China also taking a growing interest in Arctic politics.
It said that should the situation in the region change suddenly, “Scotland could become home to a larger defence presence” – and raised questions over preparedness. Andrew Dorman, a professor of international security at King’s College London, also said the RAF would require more Typhoon and F-35B fighters if there were a serious escalation.
However, the report recognised there would be serious implications for the region if nuclear submarines were removed.
