The chart showed the average daily growth of infections over the last 10 days, with Austria containing the lowest and the UK the highest

He said there are currently ‘more than 10,000, but less than 15,000’ coronavirus tests being carried out per day across the country.

Anschober is not the first to raise concerns about coronavirus rates in the UK. Dr Hans Kluge, the World Health Organisation’s Regional Director for Europe, described how ‘optimistic signs’ of declining numbers in Spain and Italy had been ‘tempered by sustained or increased levels of incidents’ in places like the UK, Belarus and Russia.Speaking during a virtual press conference on Thursday, he said: ‘We remain in the eye of the storm. Now more than ever I call for solidarity between countries.

He added: ‘Covid-19 is unforgiving and has shown the ability to overwhelm even the strongest of our health systems in Europe quickly…. It is imperative that we do not let down our guard.’The UK death toll from Covid-19 currently stands at 13,729, following a further 861 deaths recorded during the last 24 hours, the Department of Health reported on Thursday. It was another significant daily increase, after a rise of 761 on Wednesday and 778 on Tuesday.

Care homes across the country have also been recording high numbers of deaths which are suspected to be related to coronavirus. It is estimated more than 5,000 people have died in homes, but the majority of these figures are not reflected in the total. The UK’s lockdown period has now been extended by at least three weeks, having first been put in place on March 23.
