Prison bosses feel they have been left with 'no alternative'
Prison bosses in Northern Ireland have been left with ‘no alternative’ but to release inmates in response to the Covid-19 outbreak.
If that figure is correct it would work out to about 7.5 percent of North Ireland’s roughly 1,500 prison population. ‘However, in the context of the pandemic we are facing, and to ensure as far as possible the safety and wellbeing of staff and those in our care, it is, I believe, an appropriate and reasonable step.’About 200 prison staff are currently off-duty due to the coronavirus pandemic – approximately 20 percent of its workforce.
