Those travelling to the countries of Spain and Greece may be asked provide extra documents or information - or even attend an interview with the national authorities.
British holidaymakers have been issued a 30-day warning if they are going to Spain, Greece and other European countries next year.
The ETIAS, which stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System, is an electronic pass that is linked to each individual's passport. The EU's ETIAS website warns: "We strongly advise you to obtain the ETIAS travel authorisation before you buy your tickets and book your hotels. Most applications will be processed within minutes and at the latest within 96 hours.
Officials have announced ETIAS will cost just over £6 per person and can be paid via debit or credit card at the time of purchase. Applications are yet to open, but the exact date when the ETIAS scheme will come into effect has not been confirmed. Travel news site Schengen Visa Info has reported the pass is expected to be launched in the mid-point of 2024, just as the new summer season is set to come into swing.
