The United Kingdom has become the first country to approve Moderna's dual-strain vaccine that targets both the original COVID-19 virus from 2020 and the first omicron strain known as BA.1.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency authorized Moderna's upgraded COVID-19 vaccine as a booster for adults aged 18 and older in Britain.
The United States has yet to authorize an updated vaccine targeting the omicron variant after an advisory panel for the Food and Drug Administration recommended in June that manufacturers develop boosters targeting newer subvariants of the omicron strain, including BA.4 and BA.5.The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has already secured agreements with Moderna and Pfizer to purchase 171 million doses of a booster candidate that targets omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.
Half of Moderna's booster vaccine approved in the U.K. targets the virus strain from 2020, and the other half targets omicron variant BA.1, which was prevalent last winter.
