A No. 10 spokesman stressed that while the World Cup may not belong to Britain, the Falkland Islands do, and emphasized FIFA's rule separating politics from football.
Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch declared the islands British forever, and other figures like Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffith and Lib Dem leader Ed Davey urged bans, citing precedent from a 2024 Euros incident involving Gibraltar. Falklands veteran Simon Weston argued that fines are negligible for high-earning players and that the act disrespects islanders.
SAS veteran Robin Horsdall criticized Argentina's historical narrative, urging players to confront the crimes of the dictatorship that launched the 1982 invasion, which resulted in 907 deaths and ultimately led to Argentina's return to democracy. With Argentina advancing to the final against Spain, the UK government expressed support for Spain and called for a thorough FIFA investigation. Argentina's Vice President Victoria Villarruel amplified the controversy by sharing footage of the 1982 invasion.
