Hospitals are still under pressure with 17,019 Covid patients needing treatment across the UK

The current Covid wave has probably peaked and there are signs that the number of infections are falling, latest figures from the UK Health Security Agency suggest.

The number of laboratory-confirmed cases for week 28 was also down to 9.5 per 100,000 population, from 11.2 in the previous week. Case rates remained highest in those aged over 80 years old and the majority of outbreaks are still occurring in care homes.across the UK but the admission rate is slowing down: it was 18.34 per 100,000 population in week 28, a slight increase from 18.04 in the previous week.

The figures suggest the impact of the current wave of Covid-19 may be starting to ease – and that patient levels will not reach the sort of levels seen during the surge in infections earlier this year. A total of 16,600 people were in hospital with coronavirus in England at the peak of the Omicron BA.2 wave in April, according to NHS data.

Around six in 10 hospital patients who test positive for Covid-19 are being treated primarily for something else, rather than the virus. But they need to be kept isolated from those patients who do not have Covid, putting extra pressure on hospital staff who are already struggling to clear a record backlog of treatment.are still rising, however, with a rate of 0.71 per 100,000 in week 28 compared to 0.43 per 100,000 in the previous week.
