The paperwork was signed at the House of Commons on Monday night in the presence of Minister for Science, Research and Innovation George Freeman.
"Capturing Earth observation data and developing a whole series of applications from it - we're very good at all that stuff. So, I think we're poised for a very exciting time," he told his audience. The near-one-tonne satellite is expected to be launched on a Vega rocket in 2027.How does the 'greenhouse effect' work?Incoming shortwave radiation from the Sun is absorbed at the surface and re-emitted at longer wavelengths, in the infrared.
But the molecules of these gases trap the radiation, warming the planet. And more than half of that absorption occurs in the far-infrared portion of the light spectrum. Analysis of Forum's data is expected to improve the performance of climate models that describe how the Earth system works and how it is likely to react as the concentration of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere is increased, a trend world governments are struggling to constrain.
