Amidst the evolving geopolitical landscape, the UK and France are exploring the possibility of deploying a joint peacekeeping force to Ukraine, potentially serving as a catalyst for ending the ongoing conflict. This proposal, while under consideration, faces challenges and uncertainties, particularly in light of President-elect Trump's incoming administration and its stance on Ukraine's sovereignty and NATO membership.

NATO members the U.K. and France are exploring the possibility of deploying a peacekeeping force composed of troops from both nations to Ukraine as a potential avenue to end the ongoing war. British newspaper The Telegraph reported that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are considering this move. However, citing sources within the British government, the newspaper stated that Starmer is not fully committed to the idea proposed by Macron.

Newsweek has reached out to the British Foreign Office and the French Presidency for comment. This development comes amidst ongoing efforts by European leaders to determine how to sustain their support for Ukraine's sovereignty, particularly as President-elect Donald Trump assumes office with a projected policy of urging Kyiv to negotiate a peace agreement with Moscow. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, at a meeting in Paris on December 7th with Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump suggested that Europe would bear the responsibility of supporting Ukraine and managing a future ceasefire. Trump has expressed his opposition to Ukraine's NATO membership but has indicated a desire to see a 'strong, well-armed' country emerge after hostilities cease. Considering the Republican's past criticisms of American troops deployed abroad, it is improbable that U.S. troops would participate in peacekeeping efforts. The British government advocates for unwavering support for Ukraine from its allies, but emphasizes that the decision regarding peace talks ultimately rests with Kyiv. During a meeting in the United Kingdom last week, Macron and Starmer discussed the deployment of troops, but The Telegraph reported that the British prime minister was not fully convinced by the proposal. One proposed scenario involves establishing an 800-mile border between the new Ukrainian and Russian borders, creating a demilitarized 'buffer' zone backed by Western troops to prevent further attacks on Ukraine by Russia. However, concerns remain regarding whether Trump should pressure Ukraine into surrendering territory, a suggestion reportedly put forth by his incoming special Ukrainian peace envoy, Keith Kellogg. Wayne Jordash from Global Rights Compliance, an organization that gathers evidence of Russian war crimes, stated to Newsweek that if Trump forces Ukraine to cede territory, it would undermine the prohibition of force in international law and send a message that violations of the U.N. Charter can lead to territorial gains. British government sources, speaking to The Telegraph, expressed challenges regarding what type of support could be provided, what objectives would be pursued, and the broader concerns about the potential threats faced by deployed troops and the risk of escalation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that he agreed to work closely with key allies on achieving peace and developing effective security guarantees. He mentioned discussing the French initiative to deploy military contingents in Ukraine as one such guarantee. Former U.K. Defense Secretary Grant Shapps stated on January 13th that British troops contributing to a postwar peacekeeping force would undoubtedly be a welcome development, but it barely addresses the full scope of Ukraine's needs. Wayne Jordash KC, president of Global Rights Compliance, told Newsweek that conceding Ukrainian territory under duress is not merely a political compromise but a direct assault on the postwar international legal order
