University of the Incarnate Word will introduce new football head coach G.J. Kinne works on his UIW hand gesture after a press conference on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021. UIW President Thomas M. Evans and Athletic Director Richard Duran presented their latest head football coach to the university - their fourth head coach since the inception of the school's football program.
While the Southland ranked 31st of 32 Division I leagues in the NCAA’s NET rankings for men’s basketball in 2021-22, the WAC slotted 15th, underscoring the conference’s desire to someday earn multiple bids to the NCAA Tournament. For the 2,000-seat McDermott Convocation Center, UIW aims to have renovated seating and construction of a practice gym completed near the end of the year, according to a working timeline provided by the university. New locker rooms are projected to be done in the next eight months, and Duran said the school is exploring the potential for new video boards in the venue.
Duran said UIW must “enhance our operating budget to be competitive in the WAC,” committing more money to recruiting to capitalize on increased interest because of the move to a superior league. He’d also like to add another part-time or graduate assistant position for men’s and women’s basketball. UIW’s plan also calls for improvements to Benson Fieldhouse that include an expanded and renovated locker room, a strength and conditioning center, a training room and a team meeting auditorium, with the working timeline showing an April 2023 completion date.
UIW president Thomas Evans said a “university commitment” will help boost the athletic department’s budget for the move to the WAC, working in tandem with fundraising and ticket sales metrics that he said the department has increased each of the past three years.
