UIL approves changes in playoff structure to mirror football, divide classes into two divisions
The UIL ’s legislative council approved a proposal to split playoff divisions in each classification for basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball and baseball. That means there will be two state championships awarded in each of the six classifications for those sports just like they are in football. The proposal was discussed during the UIL ’s standing committee on athletics meeting on Tuesday morning and was approved by the council later in the day at the Austin Marriott North in Round Rock .
Instead, playoffs would be contested at neutral sites through the state semifinals. State finals for each sport would be staged together at one site, like football. That should help soccer teams stay fresh throughout the postseason. When Boerne girls soccer advanced to the Class 4A state championship on April 11, the Greyhounds were playing their fourth game in seven days. The Region IV-4A semifinals and finals were held April 5-6 in Corpus Christi.
