End of a rivalry? UH, Memphis meet for the last time in the regular season as conference foes
When last they met, guard Jamal Shead and Houston knocked off Elijah McCadden and Memphis 72-64 on Feb. 19 at Fertitta Center. As the University of Houston moves to the Big 12, the men’s basketball schedule will get decidedly tougher next season. When the top-ranked Cougars play Memphis on Sunday at FedExForum, it will be the last time the two schools meet in the regular season as a member of the same conference.
As the Cougars have become one of the top programs in the nation, coach Kelvin Sampson has said putting together a nonconference schedule has become increasingly difficult. Some opponents have been included in home-and-home series in the last few years to provide a boost to UH’s NCAA Evaluation Tool ranking.
“Let’s see, we’ve got 18 Big 12 games, right?” Sampson said as the Cougars prepared to close out the regular season. “Then we have a Big East Challenge, right? So that’s 19 . We’re gonna play in —that’s 22. Then we have , so that’s 23. Yeah, why don’t we play … ? Here’s what would make sense: Let’s play phis, Arizona, UCLA and North Carolina. That’d be good, wouldn’t it? Play all those teams.
UH and Memphis have played each other every season since 1995, first as members of Conference USA and then after their move to the American Athletic Conference ahead of the 2013-14 season. Memphis leads the all-time series 35-22, although the Cougars have won seven of the last 10 meetings, coinciding with their emergence as a perennial national title contender.
