Christyan Sampy will make his second appearance at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships, which begin Wednesday in Austin. An eighth-grader at Spring Forest Middle School, Sampy decided to tag along one day as an older friend went to pole vault practice. Joshua Gossett, the pole-vault coach at Stratford, noticed Sampy watching from a nearby bench.Sampy took a few turns motoring down the runway.

Gossett recalled telling Sampy: “Come back tomorrow. We’ll teach you little bit of technique and see what happens.” Sampy enters tied for the ninth-best jump in the nation this season with a personal best 18 feet, 2¾ inches. A top-eight finish would put him in select company as just the second UH pole vaulter — joining Max Herns in 1980 — to score at the national outdoor meet.

A two-time American Athletic Conference outdoor champion , Sampy is the school’s current indoor and outdoor pole vault record holder. He first cleared 18 feet, widely considered a benchmark in pole vaulting, last spring and had a streak of nine straight meets of reaching the mark this season, setting the school record May 5 at the Tom Tellez Invitational.
