UH basketball scheduling not as easy as it was when Kelvin Sampson arrived
Fertitta Center has become one of college basketball's most hostile environments, due in part to the larger-than-life presence of coach Kelvin Sampson.Putting together a nonconference basketball schedule has become increasingly difficult, University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson admits, with plenty of “hair pulling and teeth gnashing.”
UH was also handcuffed by a Nov. 20 game at Oregon, the final game of a two-for-one series agreed to in 2018 in exchange for the Ducks being the opponent for the opener at Fertitta Center. Because of that date, Sampson said, the Cougars could not play any of the Thanksgiving MTEs.UH and Oregon played in 2018 and 2019 and, because of an Oregon schedule conflict, had the final game moved to this season. The two teams also played as part of the Maui Invitational last November in Las Vegas.
The MTE the Cougars originally had schedule included “a couple Power Five schools — Big East, SEC, for sure — and another perennial NCAA Tournament team,” Sampson said. The format included one game at home and two elsewhere. UH also inquired about an MTE in Las Vegas.
