Ugandan Minister Faces Charges Over Building Materials TheftAt least 11 senior government figures are alleged to have received stolen corrugated iron intended for vulnerable communities in the north-eastern Karamoja region. These include the vice-president, the prime minister, the parliamentary speaker and other ministers, according to the Uganda's inspector general, Beti Kamya Turwomwe. Mary Goretti Kitutu Kimono, the minister-in-charge of Karamoja Affairs, appeared in court on April 6, 2023, where she pleaded not guilty but was denied bail. It is alleged that instead of distributing the roofing materials to Karamoja communities, she gave it to her relatives and government officials. She has been charged together with her brother Michael Naboya Kitutu, who also pleaded not guilty to receiving 100 of the corrugated iron sheets. On March 3. 2023, while appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Presidential Affairs, which is investigating the issue, Kitutu issued an apology but said the iron sheets were diverted because she was not given proper guidance.
