The University of Florida (UF) and the city of Jacksonville are making significant strides toward establishing a new graduate campus in downtown Jacksonville. The plan, which was unanimously approved by the UF Board of Trustees, centers around the LaVilla neighborhood and involves a series of interconnected developments. The centerpiece of the project is the historic Prime Osborn Convention Center, which will remain operational for at least five years under the city's management.
UF will then redevelop the adjacent historic train station, transforming it into a vibrant hub featuring a restaurant, bar, and retail spaces. Two additional sites, designated as Site A and Site B, will also play a crucial role in the campus development. Site A will house a minimum 60,000 square foot building, while Site B will accommodate a 20,000 square foot structure with publicly accessible ground-floor retail facing the Emerald Trail. This ambitious project is hailed as a transformative step toward creating a thriving downtown environment where residents can learn, live, work, and play. The new graduate campus is anticipated to become a key driver of economic growth and innovation in the area. Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan expressed her enthusiasm, stating, 'We are excited to be another step closer to a thriving downtown where our citizens can learn, live, work, and play. The University of Florida graduate campus in LaVilla and Gateway Jax development on the Northbank are important parts of that vision. I’m grateful for their partnership as we turn renderings into reality.' The project also includes plans for a luxury hotel and residential development at Riverfront Plaza as part of a land swap agreement. This multifaceted initiative aims to revitalize Jacksonville's waterfront and create a more vibrant and appealing downtown core
