The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego exited its two Kettner Boulevard buildings last month. The other will become home to the Navy SEAL Museum
Last month, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego closed both of its downtown buildings near the historic Santa Fe Train Depot, but they won't be empty for long. UC San Diego has entered into negotiations with MCASD to purchase the museum's 8,500-square-foot gallery building in the former baggage building at the train depot at 1100 Kettner Blvd.
The overhaul doubled the building’s square footage to 104,400 and it quadrupled the amount of available exhibition space. Before the renovation, exhibit space was so limited at the La Jolla building that the museum began hosting larger-scale exhibitions in downtown San Diego as far back as the mid-1980s. In 1993, MCASD leased its first downtown space, a 10,000-square-foot, two-story building in the One American Plaza project, at 1001 Kettner Blvd.
