County adjusts COVID-19 data presentation to make it more accessible to public

With daily new case numbers essentially flat and local COVID-19 hospitalizations continuing to drop, the region’s public health department, and UC San Diego Health, took steps to reframe the coronavirus effort Wednesday.

Other factors such as recent case rates and the percentage of recent emergency cases exhibiting flu-like symptoms will also be considered, but Dr. Christopher Longhurst, the university health system’s chief medical officer, said that viral load will be the most heavily weighted signal. That’s because the amount of virus detected in waste water has proven to be such an accurate way of understanding when a surge is arriving or waning.

“We intentionally left it vague in terms of exactly when we flip, but we are very clear that leadership will make the final call, and we’re looking at wastewater data as the earliest signal,” Longhurst said. , allows more-granular exploration of cases by zip code, vaccination status, and test positivity. In some cases, Shah added, an effort has been made to create new age groupings that more directly match those seen in schools. The point, she said, is to give the public the tools it needs to understand how the pandemic is changing as viral activity slows but doesn’t stop and may be significantly more active in some parts of the community than in others.
