Latest 'Best Hospitals' report rates hospitals on specialty care

UC San Diego Health’s hospitals in La Jolla and Hillcrest are among 22 nationwide to make a nationwide honor roll in the latest annual “It is the first time, the publication confirmed, that any medical provider operating in San Diego County has made the cut. Competition has always been fierce with big names such as Cleveland Cinic, Mayo Clinic, Cedars-Sinai and Johns Hopkins perennially selected for the list.

Patricia Maysent, the university health system’s chief executive officer, said that making the honor roll acknowledges years of diligence.“It’s our faculty who, you know, take that little bit more time with patients; it’s the unbelievable professionalism of our nursing staff, many of them who are PhD trained and are also doing research; it’s our residents who are all lined up to do projects on clinical quality,” Maysent said.

The publication considers additional information on specific medical procedures, everything from repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms to treatment of hip fractures, in its determination of which facilities are selected for top honors.
