The state will give UC San Diego $5 million to introduce a new bachelor’s degree program in public health at Southwestern College in Chula Vista as part of a larger plan to expand higher education in South County.

There are no major universities in South County that offer a variety of in-person bachelor’s level courses. Alvarez and others are trying to change the situation by persuading UCSD, San Diego State University and Cal State San Marcos to jointly open satellite operations on a piece of shared city-own land in eastern Chula Vista.
