With the Final Four set, UCLA head coach Mick Cronin didn’t hold back when naming the best team remaining in the NCAA Tournament.
The run is over for UCLA, but not without a fight, and not without a voice that still carries weight deep into March. But like many of his teams, UCLA ultimately fell short of the Final Four, bowing out in the second round after a hard-fought loss to now Final Four-bound UConn.
Appearing on "Wake Up Barstool" with Brandon Walker on Monday, Cronin didn’t hesitate when asked who the best team remaining is. "To me, when Michigan takes their time offensively, and they don't take early contested threes, and they make you defend them, I think they're clearly the best team," Cronin said. "Their size is going to pose a problem for what Arizona does to people, which is just punish you at the rim, which is really hard to do against Morez Johnson, Mara, and Lendeborg." "Although Arizona can definitely win because they have NBA players," he added."I just think Michigan shoots the ball better. When it comes down to it, somebody's got to make some shots, and you put a gun to my head, I'd go Michigan."The Wolverines dismantled Tennessee 95–62 in a game that turned into a runaway before halftime. Yaxel Lendeborg dropped 27 points in a dominant all-around showing, and Michigan went on a brutal 21–0 first-half run.The Wildcats built their run on physicality and paint dominance, securing double-digit wins throughout the tournament behind elite efficiency inside the arc and a roster loaded with NBA-caliber talent. They don’t rely on the three-ball. They punish you inside, control the glass, and force you into uncomfortable possessions. He specifically pointed to their size, players like Morez Johnson, Aday Mara, and Lendeborg, as a counter to Arizona’s interior attack.Politics
