Junior center Lauren Betts wins the Naismith Trophy Player of the Week Award after recording back-to-back double-doubles, leading UCLA to two more victories.
The No. 1 UCLA women's basketball team (15-0) continues to dominate with a pair of wins last week, leading junior center Lauren Betts to achieve a national award for her outstanding performances. Betts won the Naismith Trophy Player of the Week Award, recording back-to-back double-doubles. The Bruins defeated then-No. 24 Michigan and Indiana by double digits, solidifying their position as the top team in the country with an undefeated record two months into the season.
Betts has been instrumental to their incredible start. In last Wednesday's win over the Wolverines, Betts scored 13 points but made a significant impact in other areas with 10 rebounds, five assists, four blocks, and only one turnover, showcasing her ability to contribute to victory even without high scoring. Betts followed up with her second-highest season point total, scoring 25 points on 12-16 shooting with 12 rebounds. She has now scored 20 or more points in seven of the 13 games she has played and has recorded a double-double in three of her last four games. Although the Centennial, Colorado native may not lead the nation in any specific categories, her crucial role in the team's continued success is undeniable. She consistently performs at a high level, contributing to their impressive victories by a wide margin. The Bruins' closest margin of victory this year is 11 points. Betts' development from last year is truly remarkable. She is averaging almost five more points per game in the same amount of time on the floor. She is also setting career highs in average stats with assists (2.5), rebounds (10), blocks (2.2), and points (19.8). When a team has a player averaging a double-double, they are a force to be reckoned with
