Many San Fernando Valley residents felt County Department of Public Health didn’t go far enough to assess human damage.
Nearly eight years after the disastrous Aliso Canyon gas leak sprung up in the hills above Porter Ranch, sending thousands of families fleeing, a team of UCLA researchers has announced details of a planned study into the effects of the leak on the health of residents near the underground natural gas storage facility owned by SoCalGas.
The 2015 blowout became known as the largest gas leak in U.S. history, releasing more than 110,000 metric tons of methane and other chemicals into the air and forcing thousands of households to relocate. For about four months, SoCalGas, which owns Aliso Canyon, tried to cap their leak as it covered nearby schools, cars and playgrounds with oily spots.
During the next phase, they will recruit residents, conduct clinical exams and begin surveys of residents’ health and well-being. During the final phase, which begins in 2025, researchers will prepare available results for publication, share their findings with residents and determine whether the study should continue.
People rally at the intersection of Tampa Avenue and Rinaldi Street on Tuesday, Aug 22, 2023, to urge California Governor Gavin Newsom to shut down the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage well. Craig Galanti, a former member of a community advisory group that was dissolved in December said he grew skeptical after years of hearing “a tremendous amount of promises from all these agencies.”
Galanti said he didn’t believe that air monitoring data collected during the blowout was reliable because it was handled by SoCalGas. A 2018 report by the California Council on Science and Technology revealed that all air quality monitoring started after the first few days of the blowout — where exposures to the highest concentrations likely took place.
