UCLA men's basketball adds Butler transfer Azavier Robinson to solve its backup point guard dilemma from last season, providing depth and leadership off the bench for the Bruins' upcoming campaign.
UCLA men's basketball might not have to worry about its backup point guard problem heading into next season. The Bruins had an underwhelming season last year, entering as the 12th-ranked team and a potential Big Ten champion but falling out of the top 25 for most of the season, finishing with a 24-12 record, and ending as a 7-seed in the NCAA Tournament without reaching the Sweet 16.
One of the biggest problems was the lack of depth off the bench, especially at point guard. Next year, Mick Cronin might not have to worry about that issue due to the addition of Azavier Robinson from the transfer portal. Robinson was a 4-star and top-100 player in the 2025 high school class, ranked 98th. He chose Butler and in his freshman year, despite playing only 22 games due to a wrist injury, he provided stability off the bench.
He averaged 6.1 points per game on 47% field goal shooting and 43% from three, along with 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game, showing efficiency on both ends. With Robinson coming off the bench, the Bruins should quickly erase concerns about the lack of depth that plagued them last season. He can lead the second unit and also play with the starters as a reliable off-the-ball shooter and defender.
UCLA also added other transfers like Trent Perry who will likely start, making the roster much deeper. Coach Mick Cronin did a good job finding players who have already produced at a high level, and Robinson is a key piece to improve the bench. The addition addresses a critical need and could help UCLA return to championship contention in the upcoming season
