UC student says Iranian government has blocked calls and internet since U.S.-Israeli strikes killed supreme leader
CINCINNATI - A University of Cincinnati graduate student originally from Iran says she has been largely unable to contact her family for the last week amid unrest in Iran. Mahboobeh Davoodifar said the Iranian government blacked out internet access and blocked incoming and outgoing calls following the death of the country’s supreme leader in joint U.
S.-Israeli strikes. She said she was on the phone with her sister when she learned of the strikes, and that the call dropped almost immediately after she shared the news. “We were talking about this, and in a second, I noticed news came out that they hit where the supreme leader was hiding,” Davoodifar said. “I shared this news with my sister, and in a second, she was gone, and I couldn’t communicate with her.”All of Davoodifar’s family remains in Iran, spread across several cities. She said she has been unable to initiate contact and instead relies on brief, unexpected calls from her relatives. “I occasionally receive a one-minute or two-minute call from my family, and they say they are safe,” she said. “They have also mentioned that they have received multiple threats and messages from the government warning them not to come to the streets to protest.” Davoodifar said she was able to speak with her sister the day before the interview, but has not heard her mother’s voice in days.“I haven’t really been able to contact my family members because the government has blacked out internet, and it has blocked all calls to Iran,” Davoodifar said. She described the moment she learned of the supreme leader’s death, and the mix of emotions that followed, as she tried to process the news while cut off from the people closest to her. “It was terrifying, and at that point I really wanted to talk to my sister and kind of celebrate this thing with her,” she said. “But the second I shared the news with her, I didn’t even realize how she would react to this news, how surprised she’d be.”“It’s very stressful and it’s very scary, and I wish we never came to this point,” she said. Despite the fear and uncertainty, Davoodifar said her family remains hopeful about Iran’s future and about seeing a democratic government in the country.
