As Lyft and Uber drivers strike over wages and job security, a driverless future rolls on.

Uber and Lyft drivers with the ride-sharing companies went on strike Wednesday morning across the country in favor of higher wages. The coordinated strike from coast to coast was scheduled for two days before Uber was expected to go public on the New York Stock Exchange.

But while drivers were striking, teams within both Lyft and Uber were working on taking drivers out of the equation completely. For years the companies have been working on driverless-car technologies. Waymo said that more than 1,000 people use their service each day to get around the Phoenix metro area. When the Waymo One program was introduced six months ago, it was introduced with trained human drivers in the vehicles as well to"supervise" the vehicles.
