Team USA became the first women's 3x3 basketball Olympic gold medalists by defeating the Russian Olympic Committee 18-15
TOKYO—The first gold medal ever won in Olympic 3-on-3 basketball had the distinct flavor of a game played on schoolyards and street corners. Elbows flew wildly. Players checked their mouths for blood. The players didn’t seem to like one another.
In between the chippiness, the American women’s team of four top-shelf WNBA players survived their Russian opponents to become Olympic champions, and the first of their kind.Team USA claimed gold in the Olympic debut of 3-on-3 basketball at Aomi Sports Park in a 18-15 victory that showcased the differences between this and the 5-on-5 game.
The Russians’ difficulty in handling the sheer talent of their American opponents was clear as they turned to aggressiveness as their primary weapon, ultimately to their detriment: eight of the Americans’ 18 points came from the foul line.
