The U.S. track team saved two of its best Tokyo Olympics performances for last, crushing the men’s and women’s 4x400 relays
TOKYO—Team USA’s two 4×400 relay squads reasserted the might of the U.S. track team Saturday, with the women’s team crushing its competition by 3.68 seconds and the men ensuring that Team USA runners won’t leave the Tokyo Olympics track without a gold.
In nine days of competition on the Tokyo track, The U.S. track and field team bested all others at the stadium with seven gold medals and 26 medals overall. The only event left in the Tokyo Games classified as “athletics”—what Americans call “track and field”—is the men’s marathon due to start early Sunday morning in Sapporo. That includes Americans Jake Riley, the 44-year-old Abdi Abdirahman and 2016 Olympics bronze medalist Galen Rupp.
The U.S. women dominated the field in the 4×400 relay, as second-leg runner Allyson Felix won her 11th career Olympic medal and extended her lead as the most decorated female track Olympian in the world. The gold also moved her one medal ahead of Carl Lewis for most Olympic medals by a U.S. track and field athlete.
