Pfizer and BioNTech will sell an additional 500 million doses of their Covid-19 vaccine to the U.S. government to be donated to some of the world’s poorest countries, the companies
Wednesday, as President Joe Biden urges leaders of wealthy countries to step up and address vast inequalities in vaccine access on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. ... [+]Pfizer and BioNTech will provide the vaccine doses to the U.S. government on a not-for-profit basis, the companies said in a statement.
The deal expands an earlier 500-million-dose agreement the companies made with the U.S. back in June and brings the total number of doses to 1 billion. The doses will be distributed to 92 low- and lower-middle-income countries and the 55 member states of the African Union and deliveries from the first agreement began in August, the companies added.
The 1 billion doses from the two deals are expected to be delivered by the end of September 2022, the companies said, and are slated to be manufactured in Pfizer’s U.S. facilities in Kalamazoo, MI, Andover, MA, Chesterfield, MO, and McPherson, KS.
