VIENNA - The United States will only provide Saudi Arabia with nuclear technology if the kingdom signs an agreement with the U.N. atomic watchdog that allows for intrusive snap inspections, U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry repeated on Tuesday.
Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter, says it aims to develop nuclear power to increase its energy mix, but growing tensions with its regional rival Iran have raised fears that it could use that technology to develop nuclear weapons. The country plans to issue a multi-billion-dollar tender in 2020 to construct its first two nuclear power reactors, with U.S., Russian, South Korean, Chinese and French firms involved in preliminary talks.
