Supreme Court keeps abortion pill access open for now, sends issue back to the Fifth Circuit.
After the case made it through the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals to the Supreme Court, the Court has voted for Mifepristone to stay on the market. The U.S. Supreme Court Friday put on hold a lower court ruling that would have essentially revoked access to the abortion pill Mifepristone. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented in the 7-2 vote.
Debates about the approval, use and availability of the abortion-inducing drug started about two weeks ago, after U.S. District Judge Matthew J Kacsmaryk of Texas suspended the FDA approval of Mifepristone. Plaintiffs on the case had called into question the safety-testing process of the medication and requested this approval to be reversed.
Rachel O’Leary Carmona, the executive director of Women’s March issued the following statement in reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision Friday: "The Supreme Court acted out of self preservation, and out of a desire to not seem as nakedly political as Matthew Kacsmaryk. “This is a moment of relief. A moment. But make no mistake, they are coming for our rights. And we will defend them.
