The sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel was announced a few days later. Since then Cliffs has heavily criticized the deal, saying that it has no chance to get through regulators because Nippon Steel is foreign owned. Cliffs released its own statement Tuesday again criticizing U.S. Steel, calling the sale a “doomed attempt to sell its company to a foreign buyer without Union support.”
