The U.S. team includes the top seven players in the U.S. Solheim Cup points standings, two qualifiers based on world rankings and three captain’s picks.

“I didn’t think it was a possibility,” Zhang said. “At Mizuho I came in just wanting to make the cut and finish out my sponsor’s exemptions for the summer before heading back to school in the fall, so this was definitely not on the radar, but now that I was able to have that opportunity to play for Stacy and play for Team USA and be on this team it was definitely kind of a dream come true.

“There’s definitely some concerns about her game, 100 percent,” Lewis said. “Talking to her though, she’s been handling all this remarkably well. I’ve said it before, but you see her off the golf course, and you would never know she’s struggling like she is right now.

Petterson is the European captain this year and finalized her team a week ago, consisting of Celine Boutier , Carlota Ciganda , Gemma Dryburgh , Linn Grant , Georgia Hall , Caroline Hedwall , Charley Hull , Leona Maguire , Anna Nordqvist , Emily Kristine Pedersen , Madelene Sagstrom and Maja Stark .

The Solheim Cup typically is contested every two years but also will be played in 2024 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va., marking the first major women’s professional event at the storied venue outside the nation’s capital.
