U.S. men’s soccer coach Gregg Berhalter said Tuesday that he had kicked his then-future wife during an argument in 1991. The revelation came after a person approached U.S. Soccer during the World Cup last month and threatened to make it public.
U.S. Soccer said on Tuesday that it had opened an independent investigation into men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter after it was informed that he had physically assaulted his then-future wife, Rosalind, during an altercation outside a bar in 1991.
“There are zero excuses for what happened that night,” Berhalter said. “It was a shameful moment and one that I regret to this day.” The pair separated, but reunited seven months later, later married and have been together ever since. He wrote that “by working through what had happened, we both realized that our love, trust and respect for each other was stronger than the incident that occurred months earlier.
“Through this process, U.S. Soccer has learned about potential inappropriate behavior toward multiple members of our staff by individuals outside of our organization,” it said on Tuesday. “We take such behavior seriously and have expanded our investigation to include those allegations.”
